The Finnish Embassy in Kenya was warned in an e-mail of a possible attack against it in connection to Somalia, media reported Feb. 6. Neither the identity of the threat’s sender nor the reason behind the threat was made clear, according to Finnish Ambassador to Kenya Heli Sirve’s comments to media, though Sirve said the attack could come through Ethiopia. No other embassies are believed to have received similar warnings.
The threat likely came from a rogue element in the Somalian government, which has been struggling to survive against an Islamist insurgency aimed at toppling it. The government also was aimed at getting Helsinki to curtail the activities of the Somalian diaspora in Finland, which is believed to be supporting the Somalian insurgency.
