Morocco’s parliamentary elections are being held Sept. 7. Thirty-three parties — represented by 6,691 candidates — are competing on a proportional representation basis for the 325 seats in the country’s legislature, and 15 million people are eligible to vote. Voter turnout, which dropped from 67 percent in 1984 to 52 percent in the last election in 2002, is expected to be even lower this time. The results of the polls are scheduled to be announced Sept. 9.
The country’s largest legal moderate Islamist party, the Justice and Development Party (PJD), likely will emerge as the winner, taking between 60 and 80 seats. This would make Morocco the first Sunni Arab state in which a single Islamist group has won an election.
